care to hear about this chilling tale?

black christmas is known one of the first slasher films, along with psycho (1960) and texas chainsaw massacre (1974), and was directed and produced by Bob clark in 1974. black christmas was known by the name "silent night, evil night" in the usa, but was under the name most people call it by, "black christmas", in canada and other regions. another fact about this movies name is that it was originally written under the name "stop me", however this never made it to an actual poster. anyways, some more real life lore about this movie that i have cited from good old wikipedia is that our movie was most likely inspired by a string of murders in quebec, a bit like how texas chainsaw mssacre (which as i have mentioned a few sentences ago, came out in the same year, just two months prior black christmas) to was somewhat inspired by the crimes of ed gein. another inspiration for black christmas was most likely a common trope in horror movies (although not at the time) and urban legend which originated around the time of the 1960s. the most well known iteration of this urban legend was rather similar to the original black christmas picture, it too included phone calls, murder, and, technically, a final girl. however, there is quite a difference with the urban legend and the movie, this doesnt revoke the option of it inspiring black christmas, as it probably did with them being so similar, but basically, the most well known differences with the movie and the legend, are the settings and other certain aspects. the urban legend takes place in a house with two children inside and a babysitter, and black christmas takes place in a sorority, this is obvious however, and feels kinda dumb to harp on since the urban legend and the movie are so similar. (which isnt a bad thing! i like both in their own right. ^_^)

anyways, apparently black christmas didn't do too well with critics, and as a result ended up being rather underrated, at least in mine and quite a few other peoples opinions. quite a few people speculate that black christmas ended up inspiring john carpenter's film, halloween (1978), and uh yeah. i think its kinda cool that theyre connected in a way, it just makes me kinda sad to see such a good movie be relatively forgotten from the mainstream while a movie that was most likely inspired by it ended up being so famous. to be fair, it most likely inspired many other slasher films, not just halloween, but in a way, halloween was kind of like the first domino. luckily though, black christmas does have quite a cult following, as you can probably tell from me writing this whole thing!!

anyways, speaking of halloween, lets talk about remakes and the like! in 2006, 32 years after the original film was made, a remake was produced. i havent gotten to watching it but... it doesnt seem like its very popular?? i didnt even know about it until i saw a gifset of it on tumblr, so im not gonna say too much about it but it uh.. looks like something? im sure its not thaat bad but i have no clue, if i end up watching it i will update this part. anyways 2006 out of the way, there was another remake in 2019, this one seems to be a little bit more popular than the 2006 remake but still doesnt seem to be to popular with fans of the original (including me, i think the whole not seeing billy's face is kinda cool... ^_^), just as with the first remake, i havent watched this one!! if i do, ill update this too!! however, according to wikipedia the 2019 remake just gets rid of the original story line, which i might be fine with but it depends?? also billy has a liver disease in the remake so yeah. anyways, remakes aside, lets get into other stuff of the like! in 2016, a sequel to black christmas came out, from what i can tell its not super well known, and again, i havent watched it, so theres that, just a fact for now i guess. anyways were almost done with this whole parigraph, so let me take a moment to talk about the novelization of black christmas! in 1976, black christmas was novelized. i cant find too much about it, but i do plan to read the novelization, because from what i can see, it looks pretty neat! anyways, yeah, thats about it for other additions to the black christmas franchise! this section was quite a mix of my opinions and history, and i hope you enjoyed reading my dumb writing.

anyways, thats about it! hope you enjoyed my stuff about this film i like very much. ill probably add more of my thoughts to it sometime, as this page is kinda barebones at the moment.
